Dental Bonding

Bonding, a smile contouring treatment, can restore the esthetic contours, shape, and color of your teeth. In just one visit to our dental office in Salinas, California, your dentist can reshape a tooth, fill in a chipped or cracked tooth, contour a misaligned tooth, or cover up a discolored tooth. Dr. Hemingway uses a tooth-colored, plastic-like material to enhance your teeth with natural-looking, durable results. Contact us at NEXT Dentistry to learn how bonding can improve your smile.

If you have a slight imperfection in your teeth, bonding can be a simple way to improve your smile.  Bonding can repair teeth that are stained, chipped, crooked or have minor gaps and in some cases, bonding can repair a cavity with a natural-looking, tooth colored restoration.

Bonding can be a quick procedure, often done in just an hour or two.  Many bonding procedures can be performed without anesthesia and are usually a less expensive treatment option than a crown or veneer.

To prepare a tooth for bonding, we clean off any plaque and tartar.  We choose a shade that matches your natural tooth color.  The tooth needs to be dry, so we may use a rubber dam to isolate it.  To begin, we use a mild etching solution to condition the tooth surface.  This helps the bonding agent adhere to your tooth.  We then apply the bonding material and harden it with a special curing light.  We add another layer of resin, and again, harden it with the curing light.  We may do this several times until we reach the proper thickness.  Once all of the layers have been placed, we sculpt them to the desired shape and check your bite to make sure your tooth functions properly.  Finally, we polish your tooth to a smooth and beautiful finish.  With proper care, the bonding material should last between three and ten years.  Bonding can be a good way to repair minor problems and give you a beautiful smile.

Dental Implants

Whether you’re replacing one tooth or many, consider dental implants when restoring your smile. Implants provide a more natural look and higher functionality than traditional dental bridges or dentures. A dental implant replaces both the tooth and the tooth root, allowing for smoother chewing, a more natural speech pattern, and a stronger bite with superior alignment. Implants also prevent movement of the remaining teeth by closing gaps, decreasing the likelihood of bite problems in the future! Call us at NEXT Dentistry today to learn more about implant dentistry and to schedule your consultation with our experienced Salinas dentists.

A dental implant is an excellent treatment for replacing missing teeth.  A root form implant is the most common kind of dental implant.  It is a small, titanium post that replaces the roots of a missing tooth.  A custom-fitted artificial tooth, called a restoration, is secured to the implant, which holds the restoration firmly in place.

An implant has several benefits.  Like the roots of natural teeth, it stimulates the jawbone when you chew.  This preserves the jawbone and keeps it healthy.  An implant is strong, comfortable, and secure.  When the restoration is in place, the implant looks and feels much like natural teeth.  With careful homecare and regular checkups and cleanings here in our Salinas dental office, an implant can be an excellent long-term solution for missing teeth.

An implant can support a variety of restoration, such as a single crown, multi-unit bridges, and full arch dentures.  Some restorations, like a single crown and most bridges, are not removable.  Others, like many full-arch dentures, can be removed for sleeping and cleaning.

Depending on the situation, placing an implant involves several phases, and treatment times can vary widely.  First we determine if an implant is right for you.  We discuss your health history and treatment goals and perform a comprehensive examination to check the health of your gums and jawbone.  We determine if you need any additional procedures, such as bone grafting or gum surgery.

To begin the procedure, a channel is shaped in the jawbone, and then the implant is placed into the prepared space.  At this point, it may be possible to place a temporary restoration.  Over the course of the next few months, the implant will become securely fused to the bone.  The last step is to attach your beautiful final restoration to the implant.

Gum Sculpting

Also known as gumline contouring, gum sculpting can be used to create an esthetically perfect look. Think of gum sculpting as “a matted frame for the artwork of your smile.” With gum sculpting, our skilled Salinas dentist can painlessly reshape your gums using laser treatment. Gum sculpting is especially effective if you have a gummy smile. At NEXT Dentistry, we are committed to giving you a bright, beautiful, confident smile.

We start by numbing the area to ensure your complete comfort during the procedure.  Once the area is numb, we use our soft tissue laser to gently remove the excess or diseased gum tissue.  Next, we shape and contour the gums to enhance your smile’s natural beauty.  The procedure usually only takes about an hour and can be done safely in our Salinas dental office.  Your gums should be completely healed in jsut a couple of weeks.  Gum sculpting is a safe and predictable procedure that can dramatically improve your smile.

Orthodontics can help you to not only achieve a more pleasing appearance for your teeth, but also to improve your dental health by reducing the possibility of problems occurring where teeth are not aligned or gaps exist. Our skilled dentist, Dr. Delwin Hemingway, can help you decide if traditional braces or one of the newer plastic or ceramic orthodontic appliances are best for you.

Once we determine that your mouth is healthy, we’ll take photographs of your face and profile, x-rays to show the position of the teeth and roots, and an impression of your teeth.  We’ll use these to design a plan specifically for you and discuss the next steps with you.  Before we place the braces, we may have to make room for them by adding spaces to your back teeth.  We may have to remove a minimal amount of enamel between your teeth, or even extract a tooth.  To place your braces we bond a bracket to each tooth ina specific location.  Arch wires are threaded throught the brackets and, usually, held in place with small elastic bands.  The arch wire puts constant pressure on your teeth to move them.  Some kinds of braces don’t need rubber bands.  We’ll discuss what kind is best for you.

As each tooth moves, it creates a gap on one side of the the bone that will be filled in with new bone cells, while the pressure causes bones cells on the opposite side of the tooth to break down. This process moves your existing teeth into their proper positions and helps them stabilize.  We’ll need to see you every one to three months to adjust the tension and make necessary changes.

Most adults wear braces for about 18 to 36 months.  How long you wear them depends on how complex your case is, how well you respond to treatment, and how well you follow our instructions.

Deciding to get braces is a positive step in gettig a healthy, beautiful smile and we’ll be with you every step of the way.

Porcelain Veneers

Are you looking to completely makeover your smile? If you’re looking for a more beautiful smile, porcelain veneers may be the right solution for you. Porcelain veneers are strong and esthetic, and they can correct minor dental flaws that have been preventing you from smiling with confidence. Our Salinas dentist will ensure that your custom, porcelain dental veneers fit your smile perfectly for a comfortable, enhanced smile. We invite you to contact Dr. Hemingway at NEXT Dentistry to schedule your consultation and discover how we can transform your smile.

Veneers are thin shells of porcelain that are bonded to the front of your teeth. They can be a great choice to improve teeth that are stained, crooked, worn or have gaps.  Veneers can give you straighter, whiter, and more even-looking teeth.  The porcelain has a translucent quality that resembles your natural teeth.

Placing veneers usually takes two or more appointments. First, we check the health of your gums and teeth.  Many people do not need anesthesia for this procedure, but if you do, we will begin when we are sure the area is numb.  If necessary, we remove a minimal amount of tooth structure that is equal to the thickness of the veneer.  Next, we take an impression of your teeth. The impression is used by the lab to create your custom veneers.  In some cases, we might place temporary veneers on your teeth while your veneers are being made.  On your next visit, we remove the temporaries and place the permanent veneers, checking for color and fit. Once everything looks good, we bond them into place.

Veneers are a great way to transform your smile in just a couple of visits. Taking good care of your veneers will give you a beautiful smile for many years.

ZOOM! Teeth Whitening

Philips Zoom professional whitening is a fast, effective and safe way to whiten your teeth.  Zoom is a bleaching process widely used throughout the country and around the world to lighten discoloration of enamel and dentin.  Tooth discoloration may result from drinking coffee, tea, cola and red wine; or from smoking. The aging process also can stain and darken your teeth. The Zoom in-office tooth whitening procedure uses the Zoom Advanced Power Chairside Lamp to activate the 25 percent hydrogen peroxide whitening. As the hydrogen peroxide is broken down, oxygen enters the enamel and dentin to bleach the stained substances, leaving the structure of the tooth unchanged.

The complete procedure takes less than an hour, but a regular teeth cleaning is recommended prior to the actual Zoom teeth whitening session. The procedure begins with a short preparation to cover the lips and gums, leaving the teeth exposed. We then apply the Zoom hydrogen peroxide whitening gel, which works together with the Zoom light to penetrate the teeth and break up the stains and discoloration. The gel remains in place for 15 minutes while the light is activated. During this time, you can relax, watch TV or listen to music.

The gel is applied for three 15-minute sessions of light activation, for a total treatment time of 45 minutes. Immediately afterwards, a sensitivity-reducing fluoride paste-gel is applied to the teeth.

You will be given a Zoom home-use touch-up kit that includes custom-fitted whitening touch-up kit wiht instructions for when and how to use it.

To help maintain the whitening effects of your treatment, we recommend that you avoid certain foods and beverages, or consume them in moderation to avoid staining your teeth. This includes tea, coffee, red wine, cola, etc.
